>> extreme weather this morning. so much to get to. i am ainsley earhardt. >> i am heather nauert. thank you for getting up with us. it is tuesday october 30th. thank you for watching "fox & friends first". sandy slamming the east coast with a direct hit moving on to ravage even more of the northeast. nearly 5 million people. 5 million people are in the dark this morning. the monster storm is also responsible for at least 16 deaths so far. take a look here at some of the images that are coming in. in queens new york downed power lines sparksing a massive fire. 50 homes destroyed overnighted. in norfolk virginia front yards completely destroyed by the fire. some of the hardest hit areas

the jersey shore where strong winds really whip around these traffic lights in see side heights. atlantic city sunder water. >> we have live team coverage for you. kelly wright is in delaware, todd starnes in new york city. maria molina in our weather center tracking the storm telling us where it is going. we are going to start in new york with todd. good morning. >> good morning. i have to tell you the big story is the fire in queens new york. it is a section called far rockaway over by the atlantic ocean. this was in the evacuation zone some 50 homes caught fire. that fire started around 11:00 last night. a very tragic scene. we understand firefighters had difficulty reaching those homes because there's 3 feet of water in the street. 200 firefighters battling by the gusty winds that are still blowing.

you might remember we have a taste of what happened early afternoon when a giant crane snapped on top of a guy p ant high rise. 90 stories tall. it was dangling over the streets of new york city. the other big issue is the storm surge that happened. i was in the storm surge had a chance to walk knee deep in the waters. the subway system flooded also a hospital new york city university. the hospital was flooded knocked out the backup generators they had to evacuate some 200 cases to other hospitals around new york city and of course the big story is transportation getting around the city. the subway systems inundated. the mta is calling it the wos disaster to hit the subway system here in the city. very difficult days coming up

back to you. todd starnes for us in new york city telling us about the fire and the crane that a lot of people in new york are talking about. new york is one of the hardest hit areas. talk to anna kooiman live with us on the phone in long beach long island. how are things looking there today? >> good morning. the water reseeds some what. we look out the windows we are looking out our windows a few hours ago water as far as we could see the water has gone over the boardwalk and has been slamming into the side of our hotel we are ocean front. this is the olegria hotel here. the first and second level did have water in the very first floor was flooded. on the main drag behind us in the driveway there was -- it was full of water all last night.

it is a thick layer of sand. there were some carts there. thfdz a you haul type truck that floated all of the way down. this path where we can see we don't have any communication right now. we lost power last night i would say around 9:00 before that we lost any (inaudible). so we were having a hard time getting information even then. we have no cell service. this is the best we can do right now. our truck had to leave yesterday because of the letter. you can see pictures in just a

bit. >> there is damage in the daylight. >> the wind is whipping out there anna. be safe. >> thanks anna. >> thank you. >> why some folks choose to stay away from the storm there are some out there who like to head right to it. >> storm chaser george has just that. we have him on the phone. he is out in long island. first of all i have to ask you how did you decide to become a storm chaser? what makes you want to do this and put yourself in danger? >> ever since i was a kid i had an interest in science and nature and weather and an interest in photography and adventure. storm chasing has allowed me to travel to all 7 component -- continents documenting some of the worst weather in the world. >> describe the scene out there right now? >> right now it is dark here obviously we can't see what's going on. but earlier today the storm surge was outstanding.

the ocean was as angry as i have ever seen it. the spot where we were on rockaway beach right on the boardwalk it no longer exists. when we were down there we knew it was going to be bad we could tell from the direction of the wind and what was to come. that was not a safe neighborhood to be in. we were able to get out just in time. the storm surge flooding was just coming in and of course now we are getting reports of the fires there, the complete devastation some of the neighborhoods along the water. george, put the flood in perspective for us? how does this compare to other storms we have seen? >> the easiest one to compare it to would be eirene. i was here in new york for irene last year. this is much much worse than irene. much larger storm. not necessarily a stronger storm but because it is so large it has this tremendous amount of energy with it. all of that energy can do quite a bit of damage.

when the sun comes up today we are going to get a good idea as to the real full extent of what actually happened over the past 24-hours. that is for sure. this has been so large up and down the east coast. it has been as far west as chicago with 20-foot waves in lake michigan. >> all day and all night you have been sending us the pictures of the storm. >> i live in long island on the north shore of long island. you have been hearing about that. look at all of the downed trees this is in my house alone. last half this is before everybody went to bed last night we had lost 5 trees. these are 100 foot tall or hire trees. a lot of people have been sending us in their photos and videos. this is also on the long island sound. things are a real mess out

there. heather childers joins us with a look at some of our viewer pictures. good morning, heather. >> we are glad you and your family are safe with all of those downed trees. hundreds of photos into fox news from north carolina into new england. take a look at some of the mess sandy has left behind. first to new jersey taking the brunt of the storm where it made land fall flood waters took over stone harbor in this restaurant. take a look. millions left without power here is why. all of these polls this is on a road in massachusetts specifically. massive tree nearly split the house in half in new york. thank you to brian dempsey sending in this one. look at this video as it happens in new york a tree crashing down

in her neighborhood. luckily the house was not damaged here. barely missed it. major flooding all along the fdr highway. this cab tried to make it through but got stuck in the high water. that is why they tell you not to do that. this a car crushed under a fallen tree. this was in south slope in brooklyn. in the east village avenue c under water. police car you can see a van as well got stuck in this mess. this picture of the manhattan skyline from his home in new jersey. you can see half of the city lit up while the lower half of manhattan in the dark. >> didn't bring just rain and winds. some of you also saw blizzard like conditions roads were

far north as long island. we are seeing widespread impact in chicago dealing with strong wind gusts this morning. we got an update from the national weather service. maximum sustained winds still 65 miles per hour even though it is well inland central portions of pennsylvania moving toward the west, northwest at 15 miles per hour. makes another sharp turn this time around toward the right and head northward into portions of canada. it will continue to weaken over the next several days but still producing major impact. you can see more flooding across battery new york or lower manhattan. that will be 9:00 a.m. eastern time. strong wind gusts continuing through out the day today. we mentioned the snow in west virginia with a foot of snow in the forecast. >> you mentioned 65 mile per hour winds.

this is in new york and pennsylvania today. are you talking about wind gusts or sustained winds? >> that is the maximum sustained winds you can get higher wind gusts on that but that's what we are seeing where the reports are in pennsylvania that's an estimate. but again sandy pretty much holding on pretty well. >> very strong winds. you can't stand in those kinds of winds. thank you for bringing that to us and keeping folks safe. >> thanks now to other headlines for you. dramatic video of a daring coast guard rescue off of north carolina. this one swings through. >> roger. >> roger. >> the coast departed safely lifting 14 people to safety during 40 mile per hour winds. 17 people were on that 180 foot hms bounty when it was caught in the hurricane. the boat started to sink tragically one person is dead another person still missing at

this hour. the boat with the replica of the one that was made famous in the movie mutany on the bounty. we talked a lot about storm coverage but one week away from the election both president obama and mitt romney off the campaign trail. the president stayed at the white house in order to cover the impact. the romney campaign had events through today. out of sensitivity to those in harm's way. rom nae plans to hold a storm relief event later today in ohio. >> the most anticipated economic report left before the election might be delayed because of hurricane sandy. the monthly unemployment report scheduled to be released as you know on friday. he shut down public offices in washington. the bureau of labor statistics is assessing the situation but hopes to release it on time.

some were skeptical of last month's report which was the first time in 43 months the unemployment rate was under 8 percent. 14 minutes after the hour. it wasn't just affected by the monster storm causing travel troubles for the folks we have slight delays they are massive.

>> super storm sandy wreaking havoc. flooding of course a major issue. kelly wright is live with more for for us. kelly, good morning. >> we have been out here since 10:00 last night. right here the sand dunes and beach erosion. there's a big whohole here beca of the ocean coming up. we are between ocean city maryland which is 25 miles so t

to the south of us they receive a lot of bad damage worse than the boardwalk here. inland in delaware there are areas that are low lying that are flooded. we will see more of that during the daybreak. the lights are on during the boardwalk. the boardwalk relatively little damage. you can see with the storm they were prepared for the worst. they placed for the worse. fortunately it did not happen. they dodged a bullet in rehoboth. the storm surge from sandy is the biggest threat right now. experts from the coastal engineering from institute of technology. thank you for joining us. the most dangerous part of this storm is it sounds like is the storm surge. how significant is this? >> the storm surge is usually

where you see most of the fatalities in these events. the water comes up typically so fast people don't realize the danger until it's too late. fortunately with this won the worst of it is behind us. >> so you think we are sort of out of the woods but nevertheless a lot of that water is still there. talk with us about the combination of the storm surge with these very high tides right now. >> a lot of times timing is the factor. this storm hit a period of spring high time. it made the conditions worse. all of the rain needs somewhere to drain to. if the tides say high there's nowhere for the water to go. >> there's nowhere for the water to go. some of this flows back into the ocean the long island sound et cetera and rivers. but it really saturated the ground. what happens then? >> well, people are going to have to deal with it for a little bit of time. a lot of the coastal areas of

new jersey direct it to the ocean for the bay. but the storm surge has been dropped completely basically the water will be high enough where there is nowhere for it to go. >> experts on coastal storm surges. now 20 minutes after the hour. hurricane sandy taking its tole on travelers more than 13,000 flights in and out of the northeast have been canceled since saturday. amtrak suspending service for the second day in a row high winds and the damage from sandy forcing the railroad to along the east coast as well as chicago, new orleans and florida. no word when the trains will start to run again. as we have been showing you hurricane sandy wreaking havoc this storm triggering massive flooding in new york city. we will have a live update coming up.

>> we continue our coverage of the trail of devastation left by hurricane sandy. take a look at the flooding in lower manhattan. this is in battory park. robert gray is there now and has an update on this situation. good morning, robert. >> good morning, ainsley. first of all say manhattan right now is largely below 39th street more than 3 million homes in the tri-state area without power here after the hurricane sandy coming through. many homes still without power this early hour waking up without it including myself early this morning. you can look over the coastline of new jersey a few lights in the coastline. you can see it is darkness on the edge of town in the home state over there in new jersey.

we have video from last night that shows the surges coming over the sea walls. we had record surges in battory park almost 14 feet that was well above the record set back in 1960 of around 10 feet and change almost 11 feet. a quick look at the after path battery gardens restaurant. we are on the back patio here. the water came all of the way up from here. you can't appreciate how far it is because it is dark out behind me. you can see they pulled the sand out of the bags and yesterday telling us that if it got above 10 feet it would get this high for us to get into his restaurant. you can see the aftermath of the winds as we are very he can posed this is where the hudson river comes down meets new york harbor. if you have ever been out to the statue of liberty or ellis island those areas disembark around the corner from me. ainsley, back to you. >> zone a been evacuated since yesterday. thank you so much robert in

battory park. >> thank you so much. shutting down the new york stock exchange for the second day in a row. the last time the market closed because of weather was back in 1985 that is when hurricane gloria hit this area. the most anticipated economic report left before the election may not be tdelayed as a result of sandy. the monthly unemployment report for october is scheduled to be released on friday but not all of those employees could get to work. that's why they would be delayed. sandy also suspending the campaigns of both the president and also mitt romney. how could this actually effect the election? vera gibbons is here. we are talking about the power issue. the power company may not be able to vote. >> may not be able to vote. first and foremost the candidates had 30 events combined saturday. they are not actually able to go out there and make the final push to voters. i think this late in the game with a race as close as this one is not good. what are you supposed to do?

you have to be sensitive to the people out there. >> the campaign is not actually suspending they are working just not going to the events as planned. >> talk about safety as an issue. >> the worst case scenario we have the power outages if they continue that would not be good. you have voting issues machine issues missing ballot issues like an al gore type scenario. beyond that you have safety issues fallen trees branchs like you had at your house for example. that is the kind of stuff that prevents people from getting out to the polls. that would not be good from obama's side he would be relying on early voter turnout people would be less inclined to get out on election day. he stands more to lose if the situation continues to be as severe. >> it could take weeks and weeks. if not longer to get cleaned up all of the massive trees coming down. >> it very well could. the president needing to get out

to get these people out to the polls. >> voter protection is an important thing. he has to play the sensitive card never nined about the election that type of thing. he will play it closely here. very commander-in-chief very sensitive the whole nine yards here. generally when you have a mother nature event of this nature people tend to blame the incumbent. incumbent total party. obama has an opportunity two weeks ago shine or stumble. >> vera bib gon gibbons thank y much. the storm flooding up and down the east coast. next to virginia where a whole lot of homes are under water. >> plus team coverage of the damage continues. millions without power. we have all of the breaking details you need to know.

million people are without power and as of now 16 people are dead. >> the storm sending debris across atlantic city. streets are inundated with water over long beach island. record setting storm surges also causing massive flooding in new york city. all of the way down to virginia. sandy just hammering the coastline there as well. >> sandy dumping more than 9 inches of rain in virginia beach. image that 9 inches of rain in just a day. let's check in with our jennifer davis she is live there in virginia beach right now. jennifer massive amount of rain. how are things looking good? >> good morning there is a light rain falling. it is very cold here and it is windy. conditions are certainly better than they were the last day or two. we have snow in the southern part of the state. we have a lot of power outages and flooding in the northern part. here in virginia beach as you mentioned it is certainly water

logged 9 inches of rain the tides hit over 7 feet and it will be in the 5-7 foot range. there is a good amount of flooding in the low lying areas. they were expect that go but it is something they have to deal with as the sun comes up. they are expected to bounce back a little quicker than perhaps other parts of the eastern sea board. schools and city offices will be on delay. it wasn't as bad as up north where people were hard hit. >> still the water has no place to go. when the ground gets that saturated it could lead to real problems. >> for more on where the storm is headed maria molina is here in the weather center. >> right now the certainty of sandy is about 90 miles to the west of vphiladelphia. it is holding itself together pretty well, though.

maximum sustained winds at 65 miles per hour. you can see stronger gusts than that and also looking at possible gale force winds across central of the east and as far as portions of chicago. i want to read off a couple more reports for you. you guys mentioned 9 inches of rain across portions of virginia as well across delaware and wield wood new jersey. 11.62 inches of rain just shy of a foot of rain out there. basically we are seeing flooding ongoing across inland areas not just coastal areas. another big concern has been the storm surge across the new york city area specifically the battery area we see widespread flooding across places like the east village. we are expecting another high tied tide at 9:00 a.m. eastern time. the flooding isn't forecast to be as bad as it was last night. exceeding 13 feet but keep an eyen oh that we could see additional flooding across areas of new york city.

sandy producing heavy rain across pennsylvania eastern parts of ohio and on the back end of the system a lot of heavy snow significant snow with possible blizzard conditions across state of west virginia snow falling down as far south as north carolina with accumulation expected there and accumulation across west virginia 2-3 feet along spots especially higher elevations. very significant. still seeing the wind ongoing here. 44 mile as hour wind gusts. take a look at the wind direction in new york city. coming out of the south and east you are going to have an elevated water level across coastal areas of long island and manhattan. as we head westbound portions of the great lakes also dealing with strong winds in the 50s across cleveland 44 mile per hour wind gusts in chicago. that is picking up the waves across the great lakes we are seeing reports of 20-25 foot waves out across portions of lake michigan. rough surf out there. dangerous conditions.

possibly even beach erosion across places in the great lakes. otherwise no accumulation again. significant 2 feet across portions of west virginia. you have blizzard warnings later today and some stretch into tomorrow morning. a long period of time of cold temperatures out here strong winds white out conditions and heavy snow. >> a lot of travel delays of course all around the country. >> power outages as well. >> the storm sending romney and obama off the campaign now. they are monitoring the impact. he has canceled plans to attend a rally in green bay, wisconsin. the romney campaign also cancelling events through out the day in order to ow of the

sensitivity. storm event later today in ohio. this super storm likely to cost businesses a lot of money. economy experts predicting losses will be more than last year's storm. the travel industry expected to lose over $700 million from airlines trains and car companies to spending their operations over the last few days. retailers and corporations expect end of the quarter hit because they will be shut down for at least two-days and the insurance industry could see claims as high as $10 billion. >> voters will get a chance to say they oppose the mandate. voters can say whether or not they want to block the mandate. it forces people to buy insurance. 16 other states passed laws or made changes to their state's constitutions in order to block

that mandate. >> brand new video from queens new york. 2 huj firefighters are battling the massive fire. 16 -- 50 homes destroyed after the hurricane. the fdny are not saying whether there are any injuries or fatalities. the time is 39 after the hour. coming up we have been showing you all of the severe flooding. what do you do to make sure you are safe if you are trapped inside of your house with all of the flooding.

in marm's way is staying safe and has shelter away from the dangerous areas and the flood waters. here to tell us what is going on red cross spokeswoman anna case. what are you hearing today is the major issue people are facing? >> the number one priority at the red cross is doing right now is making sure folks have safe place to go. a lot of people are in the red house bunkers. we have 100 across the east coast. thousands are in shelters. i think the main concern all day yesterday is they are very glad tleft because hurrica-- left be sandy was a very devastating large storm bizarre hybrid of a storm. but they are very concerned with what is going to happen next to see if their home is okay. but what we are trying to do is

encourage everybody whether they are in our shelter or if they have gone to a loved one or family and friends home. make sure they wait. if they evacuated wait until it is officially safe. it can be dangerous with blood and power outages and cable cords down. we just want everybody to make sure that it is safe. >> anna we are looking at pictures of new york and people are walking through the waters. that is one thing you caution against doing because you never know what is in that water. >> absolutely. it is so critical to remain inside, remain in a safe place. don't take any chances. for more information on these tools just like i am telling you right now go to redcross.org. we have a hurricane house which is very nice. you can click on what to do next. it has the instructions on how to get back after a storm how to

clean up your home. what you need to do to make sure you are taking care of yourself. you are taking care of your children and pets. very important. >> once that water reseeds certainly mold and other things can become a major issue. anna thank you so much from the american red cross. thank you for giving so many americans shelter at this time. >> ainsley has more to look at that. >> great with the next segment. with so much power outages evacuations heavy flooding due to sandy what can you do to stay safe? we have the fox news medical team. >> let's go through some of these aund i talked about during the commercial break. you said first of all do not refreeze food, certain foods. >> actually the freezer is the more safe of the two. fridge 1-3 hours everything has to be thrown out except margarine, butter. the freezer you get 1-3 days. don't let your kids open and close the doors.

>> once the meat is thawed you have to cook it or throw it out. >> water i am concerned about. have at least one gallon of water per person a day purified water. but if you didn't do that don't go run to go the tap now there's only a little bit of water left and it may not be pure. you can boil it if you are in doubt. the flood waters can get contaminated with bacteria you can get injured in there and there are power lines down. >> when is it safe to drink the tap water? >> it is safe to drink it if you have running water whether cold or hot. if it's not running water don't try to milk the tap for the last few drops it may not be safe. >> you warned us against carbon monoxide poisoning. >> people are worried. stay put and don't panic. if you start to get worried and get fearful you are not going to take precautions. don't bring gas barbecues

inside. one of the biggest problems with katrina people cooking inside with outdoor gas barbecues. you don't want to say i don't know how i am going to cook. think before you do something. carbon monoxide ox is insidious and can get you. >> what about mold? >> as the waters start to recede we are going to see more and more mold. i want people who are asthmatics out there keep the maas metic pumps ready. stress is a big provoker of heart disease. people who are underlying heart disease have to be particularly watchful. don't go out in a flood try to stay and wait until we can make things safe. >> a lot of people are fearful a lot of elderly folks. one lady her mom is staten island flood waters all over the place. the whole island was under water. what is your recommendation for those who are in fear? >> the two big treatments for fear one is information which we are trying to give now the other is standing together a sense of community. people helping each other. that can bring out the best in

people. i am hoping to see it now. we haven't had lower manhattan in water like this ever. people losing power don't go quickly trying to cook something or use food that may be perishable or drink water that may not be safe. take it slow. >> you can't taste bacteria. if you think your food was exposed throw it out. >> if you get dysentery when you don't have good water you are in trouble. >> millions impacted by sandy as the storm moves inland flooding a serious concern. because of the storm surge we are life in delaware. coming up next we are going to check in with steve doocy to see what's coming up on fox and friends. >> the state was impacted first and really hard was new jersey. governor chris christie will be stopping by to talk about the impact on the garden state plus yesterday he chewed out a mayor in one of the biggest towns. find out about that.

210,000 people are still without power this morning. joining us on phone is the vice president of baltimore gas and electric company bob goul joining us. tell us the magnitude of the power outages. >> we outages that extend through out the baltimore area. not on the scope yet of what perhaps we would have seen. we were on the right side of the storm, though. certain parts of our service tear tore real moving up i 95 toward the delaware line certainly got hit the hardest. that is understandable given the path of the storm coming over at one point across the maryland delaware line. >> how long will it take to get the power back up and running again? >> it will take some time. we have to assess the damage. we have wind coming in here. we are going to be out working restoring power. we have restored 65,000 customers. we have a lot of mutual assistance from states all over including our sister utility in chicago con ed. we will continue to restore power today. we will assess the damage over the next 24-48-hours.

we are looking at several days for restoration. but certainly not near the damage or the outage numbers we are seeing up north. >> that is good news for folks in that area. 210 people without power that's just in baltimore alone. your state has been hard hit. you can get the power up and running just as soon as possible. thank you so much. overnight the number of people in delaware without power went up as well. right now more than 45,000 are in the dark. doug luzader is live in delaware. doug what's going on there? >> good morning. you see the wreckage from the storm. this is going to be a big cleanup. you talk about the power outage. we have not lost power here. that's the good news. you are right. a lot of places along the delaware beach area have been hit. we have an issue with beach erosion. you see this here right between the boardwalk and the beach where a lot of it has given

away. this is something that they are very sensitive about takes a long time to build this up and recreate this. they will have to go through a lot of repairs here to get everything back as it was. the good news it's the end of the tourist season. there were about 50,000 people in this area told to evacuate. some of them may start coming back today. we will see. the rain hazlet up. we may see more of that after all is said and done. the decision local officials make about reopening roads. some of them were flooded. roads were official closed before the storm. they may reopen today. we will see what they decide. there are two sides to this coin on this side of the storm you have the atlantic ocean on the other side you have chesapeake bay both experienced flooding. heather? >> doug luzader thank you so much. check in with you later this morning. >> 5 minutes to the top of the hour. we are monitoring all of the
